Address: 1034 S Brentwood Blvd, Richmond Heights, MO 63117
Neighborhood: Richmond Heights
Why We Love It: When you drive up to the building for the first time, you’ll think “hey, I’ve passed this a million times, there’s a coffee shop in here?” Yes, there is. And it’s pretty incredible. Perhaps most notable is the split-level design: after you order from the coffee bar on the main floor, you can choose from nearby tables or head upstairs to balcony seating that looks over the entire shop below. And their menu isn’t just coffee—they have some tasty breakfast and lunch items worth checking out. It’s popular enough for the working crowd that you won’t get shooed out after an hour, but you probably won’t have trouble finding a table, either.
Must-Try Treat: Loaded Avocado Toast
Address: 3301 Washington Ave, St. Louis, MO 63103
Neighborhood: Grand Center
Why We Love It: This corner coffee shop on the edge of the Grand Center arts district just west of Downtown St. Louis is bathed in sunlight that pours in through huge windows. The other two walls of the shop are lined with an impressive collection of books that range from critically-acclaimed novels to niche non-fiction. The brews are supplied by Blueprint Coffee, a local roaster that sources its tea and coffee from across the world. The staff is friendly and knowledgable, and the playlist is well-curated but not disruptive.
Must-Try Treat: Chai latte with oat milk (add vanilla or caramel syrup if you’re feeling fancy)
Address: 4251 Laclede Ave, St. Louis, MO 63108
Neighborhood: Central West End
Why We Love It: It’s rare to find a coffee shop with functional year-round outdoor space, but Northwest Coffee has it. The shop itself sits away from the street, with both covered and uncovered patio seating filling the rest of the space. In the winter, it’s heated by lamps and bonfires, but in warmer months, you can enjoy your sips and snacks under the sun. Come for the hand-roasted coffee, stay for the vibes.
Must-Try Treat: Berry Blast Smoothie (dairy-free available)
Address: 132 W Monroe Ave, Kirkwood, MO 63122
Neighborhood: Kirkwood
Why We Love It: Teleo is the kind of place you always want to suggest for a coffee meeting just so you have an excuse to spend time in the space. The first thing that greets you is a cute porch under the a-frame structure. When you walk inside, the entryway is just as inviting, with various pastries covering the counter where you order your items. You can sit outside or on the main floor, or venture upstairs where they have additional seating with lots of natural light. If you need a quick mental break from your work, play a quick round with one of the board games they have available for free use. And they’re serious about community. Each quarter they donate 10% of proceeds from their “Love Your Neighbor Latte” (sea salt mocha flavor) to a local charity. And they source as much of their items from local businesses—including the hanging plants and reclaimed wood furniture!
Must-Try Treat: Coffee Flight (seasonal tasting trio of coffees)
Address: 3500 Caroline St, St. Louis, MO 63104
Neighborhood: Gate District
Why We Love It: There’s something poetic about a church closed on Sundays—in this case, it’s a church building converted into a coffee shop. Crave is a spacious shop in a converted church, with the beautiful stained glass windows still intact. Ample seating makes it a great spot to have a meeting or knock out some work, or just enjoy a great cup of coffee. They source their sips from local mainstays Kaldi’s Coffee and Big Heart Tea. It sits on the edge of SLU’s medical center campus, but all are welcome (after all, it’s still a church building). High ceilings, natural light, and a touch of zen—what’s not to love?
Must-Try Treat: The Arch breakfast sandwich
Address: 4071 Chouteau Ave. , St. Louis, MO, 63110
Neighborhood: The Grove
Why We Love It: If you’re someone who needs a mostly-quiet space to get work done, Sweetwaters should be on your list. The space itself is on the first floor of an apartment building on the quiet outskirts of The Grove, which comes alive in the evenings but usually isn’t too busy throughout the day. Other than the hiss of the milk steamer and occasional purr of a blender, you won’t be distracted by much noise. You can choose from high-top, low-slung, and standard tables, with lots of outlets placed discreetly around the shop. Their drink menu has clear Pan-Asian influences, with items like French Vietnamese Au Lait and Hong Kong-inspired Imperial Milk Tea. If you get hungry, there are tasty pastries and sandwiches to choose from.
Must-Try Treat: Turkey & Provolone Pretzel Melt
Address: 803 Marshall Avenue, Webster Groves, MO 63119
Neighborhood: Webster Groves
Why We Love It: “Come for the coffee, stay for the plants, frequent for the connection” is the slogan on their site, and we couldn’t imagine a better way to say it. The first thing you’ll see outside the homey building is sunbathed seating areas along the front walk. Up the porch steps and inside, you’ll find the counter where you can order a menu featuring beans from Blueprint Coffee and brews from Big Heart Tea. The indoor seating is sweetly adorned with hanging plants, but the show-stopper is out the back door: a full garden store and functioning greenhouse. You can sip your drink and find a new houseplant all in one trip.
Must-Try Treat: Monthly latte special
Address: 1700 S 9th St, St. Louis, MO 63104
Neighborhood: Soulard
Why We Love It: Coffee aside for a moment, this shop is a book-lover’s dream. The walls are lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with over 5,000 “pre-loved” books available for purchase. The ample seating makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a librarian’s eclectic home: sofas, high-back chairs, and mismatched tables area arranged to create a cozy, wholly unique space. The coffee is fair trade and roasted at a facility in nearby Maplewood. Big Heart Tea takes care of the non-bean caffeine. And on assorted antique-looking plates they’ll serve you delicious pastries ranging from cheddar scones to thumbprint cookies.
Must-Try Treat: The Wentworth Latte
Address: 52 N. Euclid St, St. Louis, MO 63108
Neighborhood: Central West End
Why We Love It: To clarify, Kaldi’s is a local big dog in the coffee scene, so the Central West End location is not their only one. But we love this one because there’s lots of street parking, it’s easily accessible from all around St. Louis, and it’s a popular spot to meet and do work (you never want to be the only one having a lively chat or whipping out your laptop). Kaldi’s supplies a few of the shops on this list and many other shops across the city with fair trade coffee they’ve been roasting locally since 1994.
Must-Try Treat: (Aside from the coffee) Antioxidant Berry Smoothie
Address: 3700 S. Jefferson Ave, St. Louis, MO 63118
Neighborhood: South City
Why We Love It: It’s cool to find a coffee shop that takes its coffee seriously but doesn’t take itself too seriously. They have fun with their seasonal sips while respecting the uniqueness of both the brews and their customers’ palates. They roast their own blends with interesting names like Jolly Roger (holiday blend) and Guava Banana (exactly what it sounds like). For a unique coffee experience in South City, Sump definitely fits the bill.
Must-Try Treat: Cold Brew Colada
